For certain bacteria and protozoa
Mainly for tuberculosis
Prophylactic in people exposed to Haemophilus influenza type b and meningococcal disease

Uses
Used in bacterial pneumonia, acne, chlamydia infections, Lyme disease, cholera and syphilis
used with quinine for treatment of malaria and its prevention
Chronic prostatitis, sinusitis, pelvic inflammatory disease,
Rickettsial infections
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Bubonic plague
Anthrax
Nongonococcal urethritis

Adverse Effects
Diarrhea

If used in pregnancy or in young children leads to staining of the teeth
Interactions
Reduces the effect of oral contraceptives
Antagonistic to the microbiologic effects of gentamycin and amikacin
