Antibiotic
For certain bacteria
Mainly for tuberculosis
Prophylactic in people exposed to Haemophilus influenza type b and meningococcal disease
Uses
Used in TB incombination with other antibiotics such as pyrazinamide, isoniazid and ehtambutol
In Hansen's disease used in combination with dapsone and clofazimine.
At least for 6 months
Taken on empty stomach with a glass of water
One hour before meals or two hours after meals

Adverse Effects
Hepatotoxicity - jaundice
Fever, GIT disturbances, rashes and immunological reactions
Orange red coloration of body fluids such as urine, sweat and tears (harmless)
Interactions
Reduces the effect of oral contraceptives
Antagonistic to the microbiologic effects of gentamycin and amikacin

Inhibits DNA dependent RNA synthesis
