Special Senses and their Receptors

Mention the different types of special senses present in the body and the receptors that detect them.

Special Senses

1.    Vision (sight)
2.    Sound (hearing)
3.    Smell
4.    Taste

Receptors of Visual sensation lie (present) in the  retina of the eyeball (Rods and Cones)
Receptors of the sound sensation lie in the Cochlea of the inner ear (Hair cells of the  organ of corti)
Receptors of the smell sensation are present in the nasal epithelium (Olfactory receptors)
Receptors of the taste sensation are present in the taste buds in the mucous membrane of the tongue

The receptors of taste and smell are called chemical receptors and that of vision and hearing are called Telereceptors.
